Maven out two more months with ligament damage
by Phil Speer
Maven learned Thursday that he'll miss at least two more months of ring time as
he rehabilitates an ankle injury that went undiagnosed when it happened in May.
Maven broke his right fibula and right ankle and tore ligaments in that ankle
during his match with Christian on the May 28 taping of SmackDown! in Calgary,
Alberta. The Tough Enough champion finished the match in spite of the pain. But
after having X-rays in Calgary, doctors there told him that he had only a broken
leg, gave him a soft cast, and said he'd be fully recovered in four to six
weeks.
Two weeks later, Maven visited a doctor near his Charlottesville, Va., home.
They took more X-rays and told him his ankle was also broken. He started wearing
a protective brace almost two months ago, but the injury still hasn't healed.
"The ankle break was actually worse than the leg break," Maven said earlier this
week. "I don't know what's wrong with it. The swelling won't go down and the
pain's still there. It feels like it's still broken."
On Thursday, Maven went to a specialist in Richmond, Va., and finally got what
seems to be a complete diagnosis. An MRI exam revealed torn ligaments in his
ankle. If the injury had been diagnosed right away, Maven would have had
surgery, the specialist said. But at this point, an operation would do more harm
than good, so Maven faces at least two months of rehab.
The injury came at an unfortunate time for the former junior high school
teacher, who was just getting involved in a storyline with Torrie Wilson.
At least he didn't miss out on the opportunity to visit Australia. Maven
accompanied Hardcore Holly and Chavo Guerrero to the ring for their "Tough
Enough Challenge" tag team match against Billy & Chuck at the Global Warning
Tour Melbourne last Saturday. It was Maven's first trip Down Under.
"I was sitting at home one day expecting not to go," he said. "Then they called
me and said I was going."
Maven said he didn't get to explore the city all that much but the hotel where
the superstars stayed was excellent. Unfortunately he can't say the same thing
about his ankle.
"It's very frustrating," he said. "But if you can't handle being injured, than
don't get in this business. Because it's going to happen."
